For Cricut
How to use the Cricut Warp tool in Design Space (and when to skip it)
Where the Warp tool lives on desktop and mobile, why you may not see it, the 30 styles it offers, and what to do when a warped cut goes wrong.
Cricut added Warp to Design Space in 2023. It reshapes text and images with thirty styles and a strength slider, and it is genuinely useful when it works. Anyone can preview it on the Canvas; making a project with it needs a Cricut Access subscription. This guide covers where it is, why it might be missing, and what to do when the preview bends but the cut does not.
Where the Warp tool is
- Open Design Space on desktop (v7.31 or later), iOS (v5.30 or later) or Android (v5.25 or later). If Warp is not there, update the app first.
- Select the text or images to warp. Several objects can be warped together; multi-layer fonts and printable (Print Then Cut) images cannot.
- On desktop, click Warp in the top toolbar. On a phone or tablet, tap Actions → Warp.
- Pick a style and drag the slider. Undo Warp takes the effect off again.
Styles worth knowing
The names follow Photoshop’s Warp Text dialog: Arc, Arch, Bulge, Flag, Wave, Fish, Rise, Fisheye, Inflate, Squeeze and Twist, each in a couple of variants. Arch is the one people want for shirts and hats because the letters stay upright while the baseline curves.
The bug: preview bends, blade cuts straight
A number of users report that the warped preview looks right, but after Make It the letters cut in a straight line. It is not consistent. Two workarounds:
- Update Design Space and re-apply the warp. Undo Warp, apply the style again, then Make It.
- Bring the warp in as an SVG. Make the curved text outside Design Space and upload it as an SVG. The file below is already outlines only, so Design Space has nothing to reinterpret.
Two limits trip people up after warping: Weld and Slice are not available on a warped object, and neither is Flatten on a warped object on its own. For a result like Weld or Slice, use Combine → Unite or Combine → Subtract, which Cricut recommends for warped designs.
When to skip Warp entirely
If you need the same word on several sizes of shirt, or you cut on both a Cricut and a Silhouette, an SVG is the cleaner path. It sizes exactly in inches, welds are already done, and it opens identically in both programs.
