How to curve text in Google Docs (it has no curve tool)
Google Docs and its Word Art cannot bend text along a curve. Make the curved text as a transparent PNG and insert it as an image: free and quick.
Google Docs cannot curve text. Its Word Art (in Insert > Drawing > New) makes big styled lettering, but the line always stays straight, and there is no setting that bends it. The way round it is to make the curved text as a transparent PNG and insert it into the document as an image.
Steps
- Type your words in the generator below and pick Arc (round, like a badge) or Arch (letters stay upright). Choose a font and a colour, and drag the Bend slider.
- Download the PNG. Its background is transparent, so it sits cleanly on a coloured page.
- In Google Docs, choose Insert > Image > Upload from computer and pick the PNG.
- Click the image and choose In front of text in the bar under it to move it freely, or Behind text to type over it.
The same PNG works in Google Slides and Sheets, which have no curve tool either.
Why the Drawing tricks fall short
The usual workaround is to put each letter in its own text box inside a Drawing and rotate them one by one. It works for three or four letters, takes ages for a word, and has to be redone if the text changes. A curved PNG takes a minute, and the share link keeps the design, so you can change one word and download it again.
Printing it large?
Set the width in inches before you download: the PNG is made at that size at 300 DPI, so a certificate or a sign prints sharp instead of being scaled up in the document. On the free plan a PNG stops at 1,600 px on its longest side, about 5.3 inches at 300 DPI; past that the size holds and the DPI drops. Plus makes the PNG at 300 DPI up to 4,096 px (13.6 inches) and Pro up to 16,384 px, and a free account makes 3 Plus files to try.
